Volunteering at Oerol: General Information
This page contains all of the information about what it means to be a volunteer. Read it carefully, decide which role you’d most like to have at the festival, and sign up via the button at the bottom of the page.
This year Oerol takes place from June 10th until June 19th on the beautiful island of Terschelling. The build-up period starts on Monday May 30th and the break-down period runs until Wednesday June 22nd. To limit movements at the campsites and within teams as much as possible, you can sign up for a fixed period of the festival (this doesn’t apply to build-up and break-down). You arrive the day before your first working day and leave the day after your last working day.
The periods are:
Weekend 1 - 10-12 June
This means you arrive on 9 June and leave on 13 June.
Weekend 2 - 17-19 June
This means your arrive on 16 June and leave on 20 June
In terms of work activities there is no difference between the two weekends.
Week - 13-19 June
This means you arrive on 12 June and leave on 20 June
Oerol - 10-19 June
This means you arrive 9 June and leave on 20 June
As mentioned, you can also choose to help with the build-up and/or break-down of the festival. In these phases we don’t work with fixed periods so you can indicate when you arrive or leave.
As a volunteer you work approximately 7 hours a day. Because the festival is from early in the morning to late at night, your working hours are very varied. But there is still more than enough time left to enjoy the festival and the island in addition to your shift.
In exchange for your efforts you will receive from Oerol
a free camping pitch,
an admission band
a nice lunch and dinner on the days you work,
discount on drinks in the backstage café,
an Oerol crew shirt,
50% discount on your bike rental.
And last but not least: 50% discount on performance tickets if you work 6 to 13 days and no less than 75% discount if you work more than 13 days.
And just as important: as a volunteer, you work in a close-knit team, you meet many new fun people, you get a look behind the scenes and you have plenty of time to fully immerse yourself in all the beauty that Oerol has to offer!
Functions and registrations
There are different volunteer functions to which you can give your preference. These can be roughly subdivided into public-related functions, backstage functions and coordinating functions.
Read all function descriptions carefully on this page and consider which team you prefer before filling in the application form. We would like to assign you to the team that suits you best!
It is not possible to combine different functions with each other (with the exception of build-up/break-down which you can do in addition to another function during the festival)
Travel and Stay at Oerol
We will book your camping spot on Terschelling for the days you will be working (from the day you arrive until the day you leave) at one of the campsites listed below. We book a place without electricity.
Please note: these camping spots are meant for small tents (2 to 3 people). Unfortunately, there is no room for large tents.
The campsites you can stay at during Oerol:
Camping Swartduin, (Staatsbosbeheer)
Staatsbosbeheer Camping in West-Terschelling. Cozy, small. At night a campfire is lit on the volunteer field. Nice spot if you work at the Betonning.
Camping De Kooi
Large camping, centrally located. No separate volunteer field, as a volunteer you will stand between the other guests. Nice place if you have the need for some privacy or if you want to be on a campsite together with a group of friends.
Centrally located at Terschelling’s main road. A pleasantly busy campsite with one large volunteer field. If you have the need for some peace and quiet, we recommend you to choose another campsite.
Camping Nieuw Formerum
Centrally located against the edge of the forest and dunes. There is a special field for volunteers (same as last year). In previous years the number of volunteers who wanted to be on this site was larger than the number of available spots. So, keep in mind that there is a good chance that we cannot place you on this campsite.
Fun camping. But no big groups of partying youngsters; it is a relatively quiet campsite. At this camping you can stay in an army-tent with 6 other people or you can bring your own tent.
In the registration form you can indicate which campsite you prefer.
To arrive at Terschelling you take the ferry from Harlingen Haven. You can book the ferry via www.rederij-doeksen.nl. The costs of the passage are for your own expenses. You can change the date and time of your ferry ticket for free if necessary, as long as you do this before the booked ferry has departed. Considering the large amount of people booking for the Oerol period, we recommend you to book as soon as possible!
