Sophie Straat

In the late 1990s, the Dutch folk singer Sophie Straat grew up in the then working-class Amsterdam neighbourhood de Pijp, which has since gentrified. Straat’s songs, written together with her partner Wieger, give you a glimpse into the lives of gentrifiers – ‘bakfiets’ bicycle riders, Zuidas workers and the kids who have just moved to Amsterdam Noord.
