Oerol is preparing for Festival in 2021

This year's Oerol Festival's motto is: CONNECT.

This year's Oerol Festival's motto is: CONNECT. Out of a great desire among the public and makers to be able to experience the arts together, at special locations, Oerol focuses on what is possible. We celebrate that we return to a society where we can meet again. This Festival explores new possibilities after a forced period of disconnection due to corona.

Siart Smit: “In recent months we have looked cautiously and consulted the municipality of Terschelling and the province of Fryslân about what is possible. We are happy and proud that we have placed many assignments for a broad program. There is a real need to be able to enjoy art physically again. This will be an Oerol where you can also bring your bath towel. During Oerol Festival 2021 you will not only have a great program, but also time to discover the natural beauty of the island and to celebrate the summer. ”

Full program, but in adapted form

This year there are no large festival sites, but there are 3 smaller Hubs, spread across the island: On de Betonning you can be surprised by a program with a mix of disciplines from new makers. In the Bos van Formerum you can look for theater, performances, attend the talk shows in the Bostheater and be live on the daily broadcast of Radio Oerol. In the Tuin om Oost, it is all about food of the future, stimulate your senses and help you think about making the Festival more sustainable.

Sabine Pater: "Under this year's motto -CONNECT- you will encounter several themes in the interdisciplinary program, such as The Invisible People, (Dis) Connection, Power of the Imagination and Art as the voice of Nature. There is a full program at many locations. All program components are again part of the Festival; such as Theater, Expedition, Music together with Motel Mozaïque, Talks, performances and storytelling. There are well-known names in the program such as Via Berlin, Orkater, Dries Verhoeven, Lisette Ma Neza, George and Eran and Paulien Cornelisse. And just like usual, there is a lot of new work - that will be made in the coming months - and there are many young makers. The online program on Het Imaginaire Eiland is part of this hybrid Festival. Wherever you are, everyone can experience Oerol this year."

Maximum 50 visitors and one and a half meters

The capacity has been adjusted, so that fewer visitors than usual can enjoy the program on the island. Oerol follows the government's "roadmap for corona measures" and assumes the situation "worrisome" during the Festival from 11 to 20 June. A maximum of 50 visitors may be present at all program components at the same time and the one and a half meters between households will be guaranteed. Due to the lower capacities, the visitor is guaranteed intimate performances and concerts.

Admission bands and ticket sales

In consultation with the authorities, Oerol had to choose to offer all program components via ticket sales. Reservations must also be made for Oerol's catering industry. All tickets will be sold before the Festival this year. If a visitor has not been able to obtain an admission bracelet and tickets, this does not mean an Oerol program. The number of admission bands is limited this year.

Corona Protocol

A corona protocol is being written together with the municipality of Terschelling. The Oerol locations are set up according to the guidelines of the RIVM, so that the safest possible environment is created for visitors, artists and employees. The protocol can be read on, and will always be updated when circumstances or measures change.

The permit application is being processed by the municipality of Terschelling. Oerol Festival 2021 will take place this year from 11 - 20 June 2021 on Terschelling and Het Imaginaire Eiland. More information can be found at
