‘Atelier Oerol’ or: Studio Oerol

In the past ten years the Terschelling Oerol festival focused on the support of young leaders in the field of landscape art and location theatre. To develop this part further and to provide room for research, ‘Atelier Oerol’ was created. A workplace for young theatre makers and artists is the driving heart of ‘Atelier Oerol’.

Workplace function

The workplace is an important breeding ground for young, talented theater makers and artists. Under the guidance of renowned theater makers, they make location-oriented theater or visual art for the festival. These projects, created in the workplace, are an important part of the programming of the festival.

Some of the theatre makers, who worked in the workplace before, are now well known for their work in The Netherlands, or even all over the world. For example, Lotte van den Berg, Jetse Batelaan, Boukje Schweigman, Theun Mosk, Wende Snijders and Nynke Laverman. But also international theatre groups as de Lunatics, de Jongens and TUIG, started off in the workshop of Oerol.

Judith Hofland, Klemens Patijn, Marjolein Frijling, het NUT (Nieuw Utrechts Toneel) and the visual artist Daan Roosegaarde reside in the workplace of Oerol 2009.

Co-productions and residencies

In cooperation with its foreign partners, Oerol wants to approach theatre groups and artists for new productions. These projects will be developed in ‘Atelier Oerol’ and in similar workplaces in Europe. For example, the French group Le Phun works with the Dutch group to develop a performance for Oerol in 2011.Richard Stamp of DotComedy develops a street performance as ‘artist in residence’.

Partners

The funding of SNS REAAL Fund and support the Province of Friesland, made it possible to help out a large number of theatre groups en artists in 2009.
